My name is James van Engelen. I have 34 years teaching experience and have a Diploma in Education. I teach all age groups from Primary school to adult.
I have taught many students who have gone on to become working professional musicians.
I’ve been a front man performing in bands singing and playing guitar for over thirty years in which I’ve also written and recorded my own material.
I teach private lessons from my studio at 19 Stanley St Carrum.

I have taught every style of music you could imagine over the years. From current popular music, to classics, to video game music or nursery rhymes for really young children.
How I teach.
The way I teach is students choose the music they want to learn. We then find the music on Youtube and I work it out and notate it in tablature/tab or chord chart. The notation is then sent to the student via message or Email.
The student also videos me playing the various parts of the music. This is by far the most effective way to learn. With both written notation and video recordings.
Other aspects of music that I teach.
Improvisation.
Improvisation is the practice of playing a (usually single note) guitar part that you are creating on the spot to an existing piece of music that you are playing along to.
Not every student wants to be able to improvise, but if you want to, I have learned through experience the best way to teach it. I have been able to teach every student who wanted to learn improvisation to be able to have fun with it and make it sit with the accompanying music perfectly.
The Theory of Music
Not everyone wants to learn or understand the theory of music and that’s fine. But if you want to, I will teach you all the theory related to the music that you are learning. Chord structure, intervals, scales, song/music structure.
VCE
I have literally taught hundreds of VCE students. In both group and solo. VCE is a different approach to playing music, and my method of teaching it has produced a number of students who have won awards for being at the top of their category. Most of my students over the years have scored over 80% and above.
Song Writing.
If you want to write songs, I can help you with every aspect of the writing process. There are so many ways to write a song, endless. And you can do it anywhere, anytime. With any instrument.
It all starts with an idea.
Everything from initial conception, to building the structure and forming a complete song. I can guide you in creating the initial idea, the melody, lyrics, chord choices, song structure and instrumentation. I can guide you through the whole process. I can show you how to set up for song writing on a computer, take you through all the steps of creating a rough demo, to recording the song properly and mixing it.
